Insurance
Insurance benefits are offered through the State of Illinois and various outside vendors. Employees eligible for group coverage can select from several options for health, dental, vision, life, and long-term disability.
Part time employees who work at least 50 percent for 9 months or 100 percent for at least 4.5 months, are eligible to participate in the State Employees' Group Insurance Program. Please refer to the Insurance Eligibility Matrix below to determine insurance benefits eligibility. Part time employee premiums for insurance coverage are calculated based on percentage of time worked and, if applicable, length of contract. Eligibility for Group Insurance from the State of Illinois
Eligibility is defined by the State Employees Group Insurance Act of 1971 (5 ILCS 375/1 et seq.) or as hereafter amended (Act), and by such policies, rules and regulations as shall be promulgated thereunder.

Special Eligibility Information for Non-U.S. Citizens
Illinois State University participates in the State Universities Retirement System (SURS).
Employees may not be eligible to participate in SURS if they hold a certain visa and have not yet established residency status for tax purposes. F-1 and J-1 visa holders generally fall into this category. Employees who are non-U.S. citizens are encouraged to contact Payroll at (309) 438-3106 for assistance in determining their eligibility.
At the time an individual is a resident alien for tax purposes, they will be eligible to participate in SURS and will then be eligible to participate in the Group Insurance Program as of the residency change date that they become a resident alien. Until that time, insurance can be purchased through an individual’s own arrangements. Note: "Resident Alien for tax purposes" is different than "Resident Alien for immigration purposes."
