Each Civil Service (CS) position is placed into a classification based on the assigned duties, responsibilities, and requirements of the job as stated in the job description. Class specifications delineate the basic responsibilities and the minimum skill and knowledge requirements of each classification.
Civil Service positions at Illinois State are placed into titles using a classification system established by the State Universities Civil Service System. A probationary period of either 6 or 12 months is required when entering a Civil Service classification.
A job description is required for every Civil Service position. A job description is a record of the qualifications needed by the person in the job, the general duties and responsibilities of the position, and to whom the position reports. A job description is usually developed by conducting a position review, which includes examining the tasks necessary to perform the job.
A job description is a valuable tool that establishes the working relationship between employer and employee. A critical first step in updating an existing job description or creating a new job description is to contact an Employment Consultant.
All job descriptions are maintained within Illinois State University's applicant tracking system, ISU Jobs.
Civil Service exams are designed to assess current knowledge and experience on a subject matter. Each Civil Service classification has a corresponding exam. For more information pertaining to Civil Service exams, visit the State Universities Civil Service System.
A position review may be requested by the incumbent, supervisor, or area administrator. An updated job description is required for all position reviews. All Civil Service positions at Illinois State University are assigned to an appropriate title and pay scale under the direction of Human Resources. Please contact an Employment Consultant to begin the review process.
